Struggle against heresy, and biblical justifications for violence (IXth-XIIIth centuries) How the western ecclesiastical institution, which defined itself as an evangelical consequence of divine law, came to justify violence against its critics, is a question which has been debated many times. Violence abounds in the Bible, from Genesis 3 to the final words of the Apocalypse, but compensated always by words of patience, goodness and peace. Various solutions have been tried in the course of time.
