Gregorian Reform and administration in written documents concerning Church property in Southern France (Xth-XlIIlh century). The Gregorian period represented a crucial stage in the process of large-scale diffusion, in the West, of written administrative practices concerning Church property. This phenomenon, the impetus of which continued throughout the period of the rise of the late medieval state, constitutes one of the most durable attainments of the Reform. Making use of the pragmatic adaptation of writing to the needs of society during the post-Carolingian period gave rise, during the XIIth century, to the emergence of new types of documentation, new institutions and a new attitude towards tradition on the part of the clerics.
