This article examines the relationship between pope John XXII and the franciscan Bertrand de la Tour. Both men were bom in the Quercy, educated at Paris, and served as administrators in Toulouse, but were only brought together in Avignon by the crisis within the franciscan Order during the late 1310s. Although Bertrand had no apparent influence at beginning of John XXII’ s pontificate, his standing grew through intellectual consultation work : in the condemnation process against Peter of John Olivi’s Apocalypse Commentary, and in the drafting of the decretals Ad conditorem canonum, Cum inter nonnullos, and Antique Concertationi.
