Nuns’ monasteries had an ambiguous relationship with the world of the cities. Since the end of the Middle Ages, most of them were transferred within the city walls in order to be protected against companies of mercenaries. Consequently the nuns had to adapt themselves to the «urban way of life », above all when it came to the respect of their strict enclosure.
