Pedro de Luna/Benedict XIII and the University of Montpellier. Pedro de Luna studied canonical law at the University of Montpellier, where he also taught in the 1360’s and the 1370’s. This fact is not unusual since the Catalan « nation » held an important position in the university, which was still outstanding in spite of a certain decline. Benedict XIII was a highly cultured pope and a distinguished jurist. His success in the Church may be ascribed to his qualities and his studies in Montpellier. After 1378, his relationship with Montpellier slackened. As for the university, its almost complete absence from the debate and the events linked to the Great Schism can be noted.Pedro de Luna a étudié le droit canonique à l’université de Montpellier, où il a également enseigné dans les années 1360-1370. Le fait est normal puisque la « nation » catalane tient une place importante dans cette université, encore brillante malgré un certain déclin. Benoît XIII est un pape de haute culture et un juriste éminent ; c’est probablement à ses qualités et à ses études à Montpellier qu’il a dû sa réussite ecclésiastique. Après 1378, ses relations avec Montpellier se distendent ; quant à l’université, on constate son absence presque totale dans les débats et les événements liés au Grand Schisme.Verger Jacques.
