Pedro de Luna/Benedict XIII and the University of Montpellier. Pedro de Luna studied canonical law at the University of Montpellier, where he also taught in the 1360’s and the 1370’s. This fact is not unusual since the Catalan « nation » held an important position in the university, which was still outstanding in spite of a certain decline. Benedict XIII was a highly cultured pope and a distinguished jurist. His success in the Church may be ascribed to his qualities and his studies in Montpellier. After 1378, his relationship with Montpellier slackened.
