The essay reconstructs the historical and cultural context in which the Pontano designed and composed the De Hortis hesperidum, in the light of an innovative dating, which loses the genesis of the poem from its traditional place in the last years of Pontano’s life: this will It allows an appraisal as a central work of Pontano’s production, also conditioned by celebratory intent of Trastamara’s dynasty and the desire to ennoble the territory of the Kingdom of Naples. It emphasises the structural and metapoietic aspects of the poem through the analysis of beginning and epilogue of the first book (1 1-100; 526-579)
