Suplementación de calcio en ratas Wistar gestantes sobre las variables antropométricas de sus crías

Introduction: the effect of calcium supplementation during pregnancy on the anthropometric variables of the offspring is not fully understood.Objective: to verify the effect of calcium supplementation in high doses in Wistar rats before and during pregnancy on the anthropometric variables of offspring.Method: an experimental study was conducted in Wistar rats. Two groups of animals were formed: control (n = 33) and experimental (n = 44), descendants of three mothers each of them. The mothers of the experimental group received orally a maximum dose of calcium carbonate of 10 000 μg three weeks before and during pregnancy. Size, weight, length of the tail and biparietal diameter of the offspring was measured. The quantitative variables were summarized by means and standard deviation. The comparisons were verified by tests of X2, Kruskal Wallis and U of Mann Whitney, with 95% certainty, after checking a non-normal distribution by Kolmogorov-Smirnov.Results: the anthropometric variables studied were independent of sex (p = 0.86). Only the length of the tail presented a superior response in the males (p = 0.01); the pups of the experimental group showed an increase in weight, size and length of the tail (p≤0.001), while the biparietal diameter did not show significant differences in both groups (p = 0.154).Conclusions: supplementation with high doses of calcium in Wistar rats before and during pregnancy provokes an increase in weight, size and length of the tail on the offspring; but not in the biparietal diameter.Introducción: el efecto de la suplementación de calcio en las madres gestantes sobre las variables antropométricas de la descendencia no está totalmente esclarecido.Objetivo: comprobar el efecto de la suplementación de calcio en dosis altas en ratas Wistar antes y durante la preñez sobre las variables antropométricas de sus crías recién nacidas.Método: se realizó un estudio experimental en ratas Wistar. Se formaron dos grupos de animales: control(n=33) y experimental(n=44), descendientes de tres madres cada uno. Las madres del grupo experimental recibieron por vía oral una dosis máxima de carbonato de calcio de 10 000 µg tres semanas antes y durante la preñez. Se midió talla, peso, longitud de la cola y diámetro biparietal a las crías. Las variables cuantitativas fueron resumidas mediante la media y desviación estándar. Las comparaciones se verificaron mediante las pruebas de X2, Kruskal Wallis y U de Mann Whitney, al 95 % de certeza, después de comprobar una distribución no normal por Kolmogorov-Smirnov.Resultados: las variables antropométricas estudiadas fueron independientes del sexo(p=0,86). Solo la longitud de la cola presentó una respuesta superior en los machos(p=0,01); las crías del grupo experimental presentaron un aumento del peso, la talla y la longitud de la cola(p≤ 0,001), mientras que el diámetro biparietal no mostró diferencias significativas en ambos grupos (p=0,154).Conclusiones: la suplementación con dosis altas de calcio en ratas Wistar antes y durante la preñez, provoca en las crías un aumento del peso, la talla y la longitud de la cola; pero no del diámetro biparietal
