Teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking in online classes during Covid-19 pandemic : A case study in Senior High School in Bandung

Speaking English in offline and online classes is difficult for some students in the school. Most of them showed some incompetence while speaking, such as; they could not keep the interaction going naturally. They also failed to pronounce the language correctly. Besides, they constructed the sentences in spoken form that were wrong in their grammatical. Therefore, the skill to speak a foreign language is not acquired naturally but through learning. By learning, the students will improve their skills in speaking effectively. However, some factors influence students to get the expected learning outcome; some are teaching strategies. The purposes of this study are 1) to determine the teacher’s strategies for teaching speaking in online classes in SMAN 27 Bandung during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and 2) to identify the students’ perspectives on teaching strategies for speaking in online classes in SMAN 27 Bandung. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study design. Then, the participants of this study are one English teacher who taught in the 12th grade and nine students in the 12th grade in SMAN 27 Bandung. The researcher uses observation and interviews to obtain the data. In this study, there are two interviews: first is the teacher’s interview. Second is the students’ interview. Observation and teacher’s interview was conducted to determine the teacher’s strategies for teaching speaking in online classes. Meanwhile, students interview was conducted to identify the students’ perspectives on teaching strategies for speaking in online classes. This study reveals that 1) the teacher’s strategies used in this study to teach speaking in online classes are opinion/ideas, presentation, songs, games, and voice notes. 2) The researcher discovers that most students’ perspectives on this study positively agree with the teacher's strategies used. In conclusion, opinion/ideas, presentations, songs, games, and voice notes strategies are appropriate and improve students’ speaking ability in online classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic. In addition, the various media and the way the teacher teaches also support motivating students to learn to speak English in online classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, as a suggestion for the future researcher, it is hoped to make another attempt at the other three language skills, listening, reading, and writing. Besides, further research may portray the strategies for teaching speaking by comparing speaking strategies in urban and suburban areas. Further research may focus on problems of the implementation of speaking teaching strategies in urban or suburban areas
