An Analysis of Compliment And Its Responses Used By The Characters in The Age of Adeline 2015 Movie

This research aimed at analyzing compliment and its responses used by the character of “The Age of Adeline” Movie. It was conducted to describe the topic of the compliment used by the character of “The Age of Adeline” Movie, the function of the topic of compliment, and also the types of compliment responses expressed by the addressee in the movie. The theory used in this research is from Wolfson (1983) which proposed the topic of compliment and the compliment function. There are two compliment topic categories, namely topic of appearance and ability, both of the topic divided into two types, Topic of appearance for personal appearance and possession, and topic of ability for general ability and specific-act ability, and several function of the compliment. The second theory is from Herbert (1990) which proposed the types of compliment responses. There are twelve types of compliment responses. This research used qualitative method. In this research, researcher used movie as object. The results of this research show that there are twenty four data found. There are eleven topic of appearance and thirteen topic of ability. There are only six functions found in this research, the most commonly compliment function found is compliment to express as positive evaluation. In compliment responses, the kinds of compliment response which are employed by the characters are appreciation token, comment acceptance, question, praise upgrade, return, scale down, question, qualification, disagreement and no acknowledgment. It can be concluded that many characters express compliment on the topic of Ability. The compliment aims to give a positive evaluation. Most of the addressees who receive non-verbal acceptance of compliment by giving a smile, smile is a kind of Appreciation Token responses
