A Semiotic Analysis on Posters Harry Potter Movies

ENGLISH Poster is media for a producer to advertise their product, including movie. Poster is used to convey implicit meaning which has to be interpreted by other people. In this case, the reasearcher chooses the movie poster of Harry Potter I-VII as the object of the study under semiotic theory. This research is undertaken to observe those signs by raising the following questions: (1) What are semiotic triadic contained in the Harry Potter movies posters? (2) What is the meaning of tagline shown in the movie poster? (3) How Harry Potter movie posters represent fantasy movie? To answer the research question, the researcher used semiotics theory by triadic Pierce which consists of representament, object, and interpretation. This research employed descriptive qualitative method to answer the research question. Data of this research is 16 movie posters of Harry Potter Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at published by Drew Struzan, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets at published by crew Creative Advertising, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at published by BLT Communications, LLC, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at published by Insyns Plus, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at published by BLT Communications, LLC, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at published by Crew Creative Advertising and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and part 2 at bublished by WORKS ADV. The purpose of this research is to analyze thriller movie genre contained in the movie poster of Harry Potter I-VII. Based on the definition which is representament is the picture, object is the text contained in the movie poster and interpretation is meaning. Then, this study describes that the signs in the poster represent to fantasy movie. The results of this research show that 16 poster representto fantasy movie, because showed the pictures of place, incident and character does not exist in the real world. Like the magic wand, castle, energy supernatural, black robe and hat, the owl, flying candle, illustration of Doblin, Dobby like dwarfs, and Voldemort, “batu ramalan”, sword and the character who play in the movie. Poster have a relation meaning between the picture with the tagline and title of each posters, because tagline tells about the whole of story. The tagline of each poster support and strengthen what is contained on the poster. The posters show the existence of fantasy movie became an attraction factor to show the scene important in the movie. Poster digunakan untuk menyampaikan makna yang tersembunyi yang harus diinterpretasikan oleh orang lain. Dalam hal ini, penulis memilih poster film Harry Potter I-VII sebagai objek untuk dianalisis menggunakan teori semiotik. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengamati tanda tersebut melalui pertanyaan-pertanyaan berikut: (1) Bagaimana semiotic triadic yang ada pada poster film tersebut? (2)Apa makna dari tagline yang di tampilkan dalam poster film tersebut? (3) Bagaimana gambar pada poster merepresentasikan fantasi film? Untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian tersebut, penulis menggunakan teory semiotika dari Pierce tentang segitiga makna yaitu representamen, objek dan interpretant. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian tersebut. Data dari penelitian ini adalah 16 poster film Harry Potter Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone yang diterbitkan oleh Drew Struzan Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets yang diterbitkan oleh crew Creative Advertising, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban yang diterbitkan oleh BLT Communications, LLC, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire yang diterbitkan oleh Insyns Plus, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix yang diterbitkan oleh BLT Communications, LLC, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince yang diterbitkan oleh Crew Creative Advertising and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and part 2 yang diterbitkan oleh WORKS ADV. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis tanda yang ada pada poster film Harry Potter I-VII. Berdasarkan definisi teori yang di kemukakan oleh Pierce yang terdiri dari representemen adalah gambar, objek adalah tulisan yang ada pada poster dan interpretan adalah makna. Kemudian, penelitian ini menjelaskan bahwa tanda pada poster menunjukkan fantasi film. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa 16 poster menunjukkan fantasi film karena menampilkan gambar tempat, kejadian dan karakter yang tidak ada didunia nyata. Seperti tongkat sihir, istana, kekuatan gaib, jubah hitam dan topi kuncup yang selalu dipakai oleh penyihir, lilin terbang, ilustrasi Doblin, Dobby seperti kurcaci and Voldemort, batu ramalan, pedang dan karakter yang bermain dalam film tersebut. Poster memiliki hubungan makna antara gambar dengan tagline dan judul pada masing-masing poster, karena tagline menceritakan isi dari poster tersebut. Tagline dari setiap poster saling mendukung dan memperkuat apa isi gambar dari poster tersebut. Poster menampilkan adanya fantasi film yang menjadi daya tarik untuk menunjukkan adegan yang penting pada film tersebut. Film fantasi dan poster itu sendiri saling berhubungan karena adanya tanda
