ENGLISH Sumatra Island has quite complex tectonic conditions, one of which is the subduction zone that occurs along the west coast of Sumatra to the south of Java. This subduction movement influences tectonic activity that occurs in Sumatra and some smaller islands around it. An analysis that can be used for understanding deformation occurring within a subduction zone is the measurement of seismic anisotropy through observations of shear wave splitting (SWS). Seismic shear waves emitted by earthquakes can be modelled as plane waves. When entering an anisotropic medium they can be split into two orthogonal components moving at different speeds.
