The analysis of pronunciation errors committed by undergraduate university students of English Education Department at Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung

English pronunciation is one of the most important sub-skills of speaking. Unintelligible pronunciation can cause misunderstanding between the speaker and the listeners. Unfortunately, English pronunciation is not easy to learn for non-native English learners since the sound system of every language is different from one another. This difference can cause the learners to commit pronunciation errors in speaking English. Thus, the analysis of English pronunciation errors and the factors that caused it is needed in order to reduce the possibility of non-native English learners committing pronunciation errors that make the listeners misunderstand the meaning of the spoken words. The purposes of this study are: (1) to investigate the sounds often mispronounced by the students of English Education Department in speaking English. (2) to know the factors of pronunciation errors committed by the English Education Department students. This study used qualitative method due to the study focuses on one variable: the analysis of pronunciation errors committed by the students, particularly the vowel and consonant errors. There were three participants selected from the first semester students of English Education Department. The techniques of collecting data were audio-recording, interview and observation. The audio recorder was used to analyze the common pronunciation errors committed by the students, the interview was used to analyze the factors of the pronunciation errors, and the observation was used to strenghten the data of common pronunciation errors and the factors that caused those errors. The result of analyzing the pronunciation of the students in reading an English text shows that the students face nine problems in English pronunciations. The problems are the difficulty in pronouncing vowels ‘a’, ‘o’, ‘u’, consonants ‘d’ in final position, the sound /θ/, consonants ‘v’, ‘s’, ‘r’, and ‘gh’. The result of the interview shows that there are four certain factors that cause the students committed pronunciation errors. The first factor is mother tongue interference, the second factor is sound system difference, the third factor is the inconsistency of English sounds, and the last factor is the influence of spelling. Then the result of the observation shows that the data of the common pronunciation errors committed by the students and data of the factors of pronunciation errors are valid
