Grade retention affects millions of children every year. This widely used practice has generated lots of interest and many studies have been conducted. This paper sums up an extensive amount of information on retention, including its history, the students at-risk for failure, the effects of retention, and alternatives to it. The argument is that retention is a negative practice and alternatives should be used instead.· This paper looks deeply at the other forms of remedial education and provides evidence for why they are superior to retention. This paper presents a strong argument against the use of retention and illustrates the wide assortment of other successful solutions available for public schools and parents
