Jersey heifers answers on pearlmillet pasture with and without access to shade.

The objective was to evaluate the behavioral and physiological responses of 20 heifers Jersey purebred origin, aged between 12 and 14 months and average live weight of 198.35 ± 28.7 kg in millet grazing in experimental design completely randomized design with two treatments (without access to shade - with access to shade) and ten repetitions (cows). The study was conducted in an area of Embrapa Temperate Climate - Experimental Station Lowlands, for 33 days (01.10.2014 to 02.12.2014). There were three reviews where the behavioral variables were observed for 24 hours, evaluating grazing time, ruminating time (standing and lying), while in other activities (standing and lying) and search time by the water cooler. And physiological variables were evaluated respiratory rate and the hair coat surface temperature. Animal performance was evaluated by weighing the animals at the beginning and end of the experiment. Animals with access to shade showed a larger total grazing time (P = 0.0012) and day (P = 0.0002). Rumination activity did not suffer effect of the treatments (P> 0.05). Long been observed in other activities overall (P = 0.0063) and day (P = 0.0001), for animals without access to shade. There was a significant difference (P = 0.0026) between the hours of the day for respiratory rate, with higher values at 13: 00h. For hair coat surface temperature, there was a significant interaction treatment x time of day (P = 0.0001), with higher values at 13: 00h in the treatment without access to shade and at 8: 00h and 18: 00h in treatment access the shadow. Treatment effects (P = 0.0038) on the average daily gain (ADG), where animals with access to shade achieved major. No replacement daytime grazing by night nor change in the pattern of daytime grazing by dairy heifers in heat stress conditions. The use of shadow on the grassland improving the physiology and improved animal performance.Sem bolsaO objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as respostas comportamentais e fisiológicas de 20 novilhas da raça Jersey, puras de origem, com idade entre 12 e 14 meses e peso vivo médio de 198,35 ± 28,7 kg, em pastejo de milheto num delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com dois tratamentos (sem acesso à sombra - com acesso à sombra) e dez repetições (vacas). O estudo foi realizado em área pertencente a Embrapa Clima Temperado - Estação Experimental Terras Baixas, durante 33 dias (10/01/2014 a 12/02/2014). Foram realizadas três avaliações, onde as variáveis comportamentais foram observadas durante 24 horas, avaliando o tempo de pastejo, tempo de ruminação (em pé e deitado), tempo em outras atividades (em pé e deitado) e tempo de procura pelo bebedouro. Como variáveis fisiológicas foram avaliadas a frequência respiratória e a temperatura de superfície de pelame. O desempenho animal foi avaliado através de pesagem dos animais no início e ao término do experimento. Os animais com acesso à sombra apresentaram maior tempo de pastejo total (P=0,0012) e diurno (P=0,0002). A atividade de ruminação não sofreu efeito dos tratamentos (P>0,05). Foi observado maior tempo em outras atividades total (P=0,0063) e diurno (P=0,0001), para os animais sem acesso à sombra. Houve diferença significativa (P=0,0026) entre as horas do dia para frequência respiratória, com maiores valores às 13:00h. Para temperatura de superfície de pelame, houve efeito da interação tratamento x hora do dia (P=0,0001), com maiores valores às 13:00h no tratamento sem acesso à sombra e às 8:00h e 18:00h no tratamento com acesso à sombra. Houve efeito dos tratamentos (P=0,0038) sobre o ganho médio diário (GMD), onde os animais com acesso à sombra obtiveram maiores ganhos. Não há substituição do pastejo diurno pelo noturno nem alteração no padrão de pastejo diurno por novilhas Jersey em condições de estresse calórico.
