Aberrant endothelial cell (EC)-mediated angiogenesis is a crucial feature contributing to critical limb ischemia in patients with diabetes. The sonic hedgehog (SHH) pathway robustly participates in angiogenesis but is repressed in hyperglycemia by not fully understood mechanisms.
