[[abstract]]Diabetes is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide and approximately 90% of cases are characterized by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance (diabetes type 2). Diabetes is raising the concern for new treatments to prevent and control the disease. An alternative treatment, Psidium guajava leaves and fruits have been reported to improve diabetes condition by increasing insulin receptor substrate 1 phosphorylation, improving insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism in vivo as well as in vitro, through the inhibition of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) - a negative regulator in the insulin pathway.
