Optical plastics filled by nano-sized magnetic particles may have relevant applications in magneto-optics. Here, an in-situ method for the preparation of magnetic nanoparticles embedded in polystyrene by thermal decomposition of it-on mercaptide is described. Transparent ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic nanocomposites have been produced using iron (II) and iron (III) mercaptides. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
