Geomorphological evolution of the Sabaudia Lagoon, Tyrrhennian Sea, central Italy. Evoluzione morfologica della laguna di Sabàudia (Mar Tirreno, Italia Ccntrale)

Geomorphological features of the lagoonal system of Sabàudia (Lazio Province, central Italy) have been studied in this research. It has been possible to point out the late Quaternary evolution of this coastal transitional environment throughout morphological surveys, stratigraphic and sedimentological analysis both of emerged and underwater landscape of the lagoon. The Quaternary geologic history and the morphological features of the coastal zone suggest that the lagoon formation and evolution are linked to mutual interactions between tectono-sedimentary, climatic and hydrodynamic factors acting during late Pleistocene - Holocene. These physical factors acted on a landscape of inherited morphostructures bordered by high morphologic reliefs: a wide marine basin delimited by Torre Astura cape to the North and by Mount Circeo promontory to the South. Between middle and late Pleistocene a series of terraces characterised by a marine-to-lagoon depositional sequence has been formed. During the late Pleistocene the marine basin has been filled with volcanoclastic deposits erupted from the Vulcano Laziale active vents. Littoral spits and several dune ridges in clockwise orientation have developed, barring a wide lagoonal environment leading to a gradual filling towards the end of the Tyrrhenian. During the Würm sea-level fall, the coastline moved seaward for a dozen of kilometres and in the coastal plain wide marshes dissected by deep river valleys developed. Starting from the post-glacial until the Holocene, the coastline has retreated and the rise of the sea-level has drowned the river valleys, originating a rias coast. The progressive emersion of sand bars and their movement towards inland is linked to the Astura River delta growth. Probably starting from the Holocene climatic optimum (about 6000 years B.P.) the bars have settled North of Mount Circeo, causing the developement of present-day dune ridge and the consequent barring of four lagoons in the back. 14C datations of two peat levels at the base of a terrace along the South bank of Sabàudia lagoon indicate an age of about 2000 years B.P. (Roman Age). Finally, the genesis of this comb-shaped lagoon, the only one in Italy and perhaps in Europe with six orthogonal arms, is due to drowning during the post-glacial sea-level rise of a pleistocenic coast dissected by several river paleovalleys, which were barred during the middle Holocene. The fact that these rias have not been filled is probably linked to the sediment deficit both due to the great distance from the Vulcano Laziale pyroclastic vents and the wideness of the costal plain in which rivers deposited most of their sediments. La laguna di Sabàdia presenta una geometria a pettine, unica in Italia e forse in Europa, con sei bracci ortogonali alla riva. Le indagini geomorfologiche lungo le aree emerse e sommerse e le analisi morfostratigrafiche hanno messo in luce che la laguna si è impostata su un paesaggio ereditato e si è evoluta a partire dall'Olocene medio. La genesi della laguna è legata a processi di deriva litoranea che hanno sviluppato un cordone litorale in una baia marina con bassi fondali, caratterizzata da una precedente costa a rias. Questa baia è stata gradualmente colmata dagli apporti vulcanoclastici del Vulcano Laziale e dai sedimenti fluviali del F. Astura. Tra il Pleistocene medio e superiore si sviluppò una serie di terrazzi deposizionali di ambiente marino-lagunare; nel tardo-Pleistocene si generarono più ordini di cordoni litorali sormontati da dune in graduale rotazione oraria che isolarono un ampio bacino salmastro, colmato alla fine del Tirreniano. Durante il Würm la piana costiera, che si protendeva per alcune decine di kilometri verso il mare, veniva dissecata da profonde incisioni fluviali e caratterizzata da aree palustri; la risalita del livello marino post-glaciale determinò la sommersione delle valli fluviali originando una costa a rias. Il sistema lagunare verosimilmente si è impostato dopo l'optimum climatico olocenico, quando si erano esaurite le fasi neotettoniche ed il paesaggio aveva assunto una fisiografia simile all'attuale. La progressiva emersione delle barre sabbiose e la loro migrazione verso il Monte Circeo hanno favorito lo sviluppo di un esteso cordone dunare stabile. Quest'ultimo ha separato nell'area retrodunare un braccio di mare in cui si sono formati per parziale colmamento quattro ambienti salmastri contigui. Datazioni radiometriche 14C su due livelli torbosi alla base di un terrazzo lungo la sponda lagunare meridionale di Sabàudia hanno restituito un'età di 2000 anni BP. Il mancato colmamento delle rias è probabilmente connesso anche al deficit sedimentario dovuto sia alla maggiore distanza dai centri eruttivi piroclastici del Vulcano Laziale, sia alla presenza dell'ampia Piana Pontina in cui i corsi d'acqua hanno depositato la maggior parte dei loro sedimenti
