The Kingdom of Naples

From the mid 14th to the early 16th century the history of the kingdom of Naples was affected by many succession and civil wars between the different branches of Anjou family, dynasties of Anjou and Aragon, France and Spain, until the inclusion of Naples in the spanish Empire. Trafics were dominated by foreign operators, coming from Tuscany or Catalonia. Scholars considered traditionally that in this period south italian cities and their élites, in spite of their growth in autonomy, were politically oppressed by monarchy and feudality and economically colonized by foreign merchants. This position was contested in the last two decades.
