The Role of the New Media in the Promotion of a European Union Identity

The research project concentrates on the communication system of the EU and on the crucial role played by new information technologies in the construction of a supranational identity. Against a background of widespread scepticism and scant popular endorsement, the EU is seeking effective ways to prompt civic participation and gather consensus. The institutions’ need to foster a sense of common identity and deeper solidarity among citizens finds reflection in important changes in EU discourse and, consequently, in new strategies adopted in the framework of its communication policies. For the purpose of this study, the above changes are analyzed in relation to the potential of new information and communication technologies, with particular reference to the EUROPA website, the EU’s most important communication channel with civic society
