A distinguished transnational, transgenerational and transdisciplinary group of researchers, working together in six research teams, shows how citizenship has developed, emphasizing continuities and breaking points, particularly but not only in European countries. It also addresses the question of 'identities' and the ways that this very ambiguous concept is used in different historical and historiographical contexts.
