Restructuring Economy and State. - South Africa's post-apartheid negotiation -

The transition from an apartheid to a post-apartheid order in South Africa has demanded the restructuring and transformation of what was an authoritarian and racist social and political system.Transformation has been complex because it has required the reconfiguration of race and class inequalities in the State and in society. Racial segregation has left indelible marks on the landscape and built environment,on social structures,on material conditions and on the ways in which the State and communities work together.But,at the same time,the post-apartheid city is more complicated and diverse than the delineation of apartheid segregation indicates. Identities do not configure around race alone.Rather,identities are fragmented and multiple,citizens have connections across the city and beyond the city in rural and metropolitan areas in other parts of the country:social status versus social classes. The spatiality of these social and economical fragmented urban identities perpetuate and rupture the apartheid racial frame
