Sub-mandibular soft tissue myxoma in a teenager patient

Soft tissue myxoma or intramuscular myxoma (IM), is an uncommon benign tumor composed of fibroblasts and abundant myxoid stroma, that presents as a slow growing, ussually asymptomatic mass confined to the skeletal muscle. They are generally found at the limbs and exceedingly rare neck masses in the pediatric population. We report a case of a 13 years old male with a soft tissue myxoma localized in the submental space, that have been growing slowly for more than two years. A computed tomography revealed a hypodense mass located in the root of the tongue. The tumor was excised in an uneventful procedure. The pathological diagnosis was a soft tissue myxoma. The patient made an excellent recovery after the surgery and the follow up two years later revealed no recurrence. Soft tissue myxoma are extremely rare in the pediatric population, however must be considered in the differential diagnosis of masses of the neck
