UIDB/00657/2020 UIDP/00657/2020After 150 years of Spanish dominium in the Portuguese theatrical system, in the beginnings of the 18th century the Spanish cultural products face unforeseen obstacles in Portugal. Notwithstanding the appearance of new French and Italian theatre aesthetics and the creation of a united instance of censorship aiming at rescuing Portuguese national identity, Spanish Golden Age theatre was still cherished both by Portuguese audiences and by the intellectual aristocracy championed by Marquês de Valença on his Apologetic Discourse (1739) and subsequent texts (1748). In order to revaluate the history of Spanish theatre decay in Portugal, the quarrel between the Spanish and French theatre is revisited through the analysis of the theoretical issues and its reflections both on theatre censorship and on 18th century Portuguese stages.publishersversionpublishe
