Notwithstanding the appearance of new French and Italian theatre aesthetics and the creation of a united instance of censorship aiming at rescuing Portuguese national identity, Spanish Golden Age theatre was still cherished both by Portuguese audiences and by the intellectual aristocracy championed by Marquês de Valença on his Apologetic Discourse (1739) and subsequent texts (1748).
