Developing a Digital Storytelling in Retelling Narrative Text To Improve Students` Speaking Abilityand Their Motivation

English is one of the most important foreign languages to learn in Indonesia. However, there are at least two kinds of problems that contributed to the difficulties of the ten graders of MAN 1 Bogor in mastering speaking ability. The first are related to cognitive and psychomotoric problems such as lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, a lack of structure and comprehension and a lack of fluencyand the second one is related about mental problems such as feeling fear of making mistakes, feeling shy and hesitated or even lack of confidence that make them not only speak unspontaneously but also unmotivated to improve speaking English. Furthermore, the poor availability of teaching materials for teaching speaking ability, which not only results in a lack of innovative learning models implemented by teachers, but also causes the teaching learning process in the classroom to become teacher-centered also contribute to other difficulties of the ten graders of MAN 1 Bogor in mastering speaking ability. On this occasion, the researcher felt necessary to utilize an instructional media which is appropriate with the students` need to overcome their problem by developing a digital storytelling in retelling a narrative text to support ten graders of MAN 1 Bogor to improve their speaking ability and motivation. The research used educational research and development (R&D) using ADDIE developed by Reiser and Molenda (1990s) that consists: analyze, design, develop, implementation and evaluation. The data were in the form of the quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were gathered from questionnaires and rubric. Meanwhile, to obtain the qualitative data, interviews viii and observartion were conducted. The research was conducted in MAN 1 Bogor. Results of this research was a digital storytelling in retelling a narrative to improve students` speaking ability and motivation which was analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods. Media expert validation obtained 86, 7% very eligible. The students` responses obtained 79 % eligible. Meanwhile, the students` speaking ability after using the media obtained value 0.008 which smaller than 0.05 and the students` motivation obtained 88% very eligible. It can be concluded that the digital media developed is eligible to use as an instructional media and has influences to improve the students` speaking ability and their motivation
