The genus Crepis L. (Asteraceae / Compositae) comprises more than 250 currently recognized species and is distributed throughout the northern hemisphere and Africa, with the Mediterranean area being the most important center of its diversification. Today, less than 10% of the species have been investigated either from a phytochemical or a bioactivity point of view.The genus has been reported rich in sesquiterpene lactones and especially guaianolides, with other terpenoids also being identified, such as triterpenes and sterols. Another widespread group of specialized natural products is phenolics and flavonoids, with predominant compounds being caffeoyl and luteolin derivatives, respectively.
