The paper is a study of the role of context as determinant agent of genre formation in postmodernist discourse. Postmodernism, by way of foregrounding the epistemological role of context, undermines the possibility of genre classification and thus, as is well known, has some problems determining its own genre. Comparing postmodernism to an embryo in constant nascent state, Lyotard announces a paradoxical birth of a "non-genre" whose birth cannot be finalized, thus also undermining the foundations of any genre studies
