The soluble form of ADCYs, ADCY10, is ubiquitously expressed in the cytoplasm and distinct organelles including cell nucleus. In contrast to its membrane-associated isoforms (ADCY1-9) which are stimulated by G-protein-coupled receptors, ADCY10 is activated by bicarbonate (HCO3-) and can form cAMP in nearly all cell compartments. ADCY10 is involved in a variety of physiological as well as pathological processes including cell cycle control in tumor cells. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear.
