Depuis des décennies, le captage du courant pour les trains se fait par le contact entre une ligne électrifiée et un élément conducteur glissant dessus. En France et plus particulièrement avec la SNCF le contact pour ses trains se fait majoritairement entre la caténaire, ensemble de câbles électriques en cuivre se situant au-dessus du train et le pantographe, bras se situant au-dessus de la locomotive venant se plaquer contre la caténaire.
