Receptions of Thucydides : the legacy of his thought in the politics of the post-war period

Cette thèse est une analyse de la réception de l’Histoire de la Guerre du Péloponnèse de Thucydide dans la pensée politique après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Elle est divisée en trois parties. Dans la première nous analysons comment Thucydide est approprié dans les discours politiques et les sciences politiques, surtout dans la théorie des relations internationales, avec les multiples problèmes que cet exercice entraîne. La deuxième partie est dédiée à la réception de Thucydide par les hellénistes. Un long chapitre est consacré à Jacqueline de Romilly et sa rigoureuse interprétation de l’Histoire. Puis différents spécialistes sont étudiés. Les exemples les plus importants sont ceux de M. I. Finley, Ste. Croix, Chatelet, Loraux, Lisa Kallet et Sthal. Nous montrons comment Thucydide peut être interprété dans toute sa complexité par ces différents chercheurs. La dernière partie traite de la réception de Thucydide dans la philosophie politique, où des philosophes comme Leo Strauss, Castoriadis ou Voegelin sont étudiés. Car Thucydide est un auteur fondamental, autant dans la compréhension historique de l’être humain que dans les analyses philosophiques. En effet, Thucydide a écrit un texte qui est, comme il l’indique lui-même, un trésor pour toujours. Surtout pour ceux qui veulent comprendre en profondeur en quoi consiste l’aspect politique de l’homme.This thesis analyzes the reception of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War in political thought after the Second World War. It is divided into three parts. First, we analyze how political discourse and political science appropriated Thucydides, especially in the international relations theory, with the multiple problems this exercise entails. The second part is dedicated to the Hellenists' reception. A lengthy chapter is devoted to Jacqueline de Romilly and her rigorous interpretation of history. Different specialists are studied; the most important are M. I. Finley, Ste. Croix, Chatelet, Loraux, Lisa Kallet and Sthal. We show how Thucydides can be interpreted in all its complexity by these various scholars. The last part deals with the reception of Thucydides in political philosophy, where philosophers like Leo Strauss, Castoriadis, or Voegelin are studied. Thucydides is a fundamental author in the historical understanding of human beings and philosophical analyses. Indeed, Thucydides wrote a text that is, as he himself says, a treasure forever.
