St Peter's Church in Hackness, North Yorkshire, contains a remarkable Anglo-Saxon memorial cross (8th century), which commemorates 'Abbess Oedilburga' (possibly Ethelburga). Reflecting the scholarly interests of Northumbria at this period, it is incscribed in three different alphabets, only one of which can be read: it's Latin. The other two inscriptions are written in hahal runes (this might be English) and ogham (this might be Irish). The pictures are annotated and further reading is supplied.</p
