Analyzing global trends that cut across education systems and stressing the rise of new modes of governance of education systems, a vast literature discusses the transformations at work in education systems in recent decades. Taking stock of literature, this entry first discusses the conceptual shift from the notion of government to the one of governance. It then examines the transformations that have taken place in educational systems in recent decades, highlighting their effects as put forward by the literature. It finally discusses the influence of new public management in the current transformations
