Living inside the news. Covid-19 and press photography in Catalonia

Les situacions de crisis col·lectives, com ara la pandèmia de la covid-19, insten a recuperar un conjunt de trops visuals específics que faciliten com explicar-les. Els periodistes els utilitzen per relatar situacions complexes a una societat que, aclaparada per la circumstància, demana informació que ajudi a fer comprensible allò que s’està vivint. Es tracta de recursos visuals, patrons preestablerts que s’han mostrat eficaços anteriorment. Per la seva durada, dimensió internacional i afectació transversal, la pandèmia de la covid-19 ha esdevingut una crisi singular, que ha demanat revisar les maneres d’explicar les situacions de conflicte. La pandèmia ha posat en relleu les diferents estratègies de visibilitat i invisibilitat adoptades per institucions, administracions i mitjans de comunicació, i ha evidenciat la dimensió política de les imatges. En aquesta investigació, per mitjà d’una triangulació metodològica basada en entrevistes i anàlisi de contingut, s’ha cartografiat l’experiència dels fotògrafs de premsa de tres dels principals mitjans impresos de Catalunya durant les primeres set setmanes de pandèmia. La covid-19 ha posat de manifest les transformacions que està vivint el fotoperiodisme, el rol de les agències i els gabinets de comunicació.Situations of collective crisis, such as pandemics, urge the recovery of a series of specific visual tropes that help to explain them. Journalists use these visual tropes to narrate complex situations to a society which, overwhelmed by the circumstances, demands information that helps it to understand what it is experiencing. These are visual resources and preestablished templates that have proved effective in the past. Because of its duration, international scope and cross-cutting impact, the Covid-19 pandemic has become a unique crisis, and this has led to the need to review the way in which situations of conflict are explained. The pandemic has highlighted different strategies of visibility and invisibility adopted by institutions, public administrations and the media, and it has underlined the political dimension of images. In this research, methodological triangulation based on interviews and analysis of content was used to map the experience of press photographers from three major print media in Catalonia during the first seven weeks of the pandemic.
