Abstract Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted critical care services worldwide. Examining how critical care systems responded to the COVID-19 pandemic on a national level will be useful in setting future critical care plans. The present study aimed to describe the utilization of critical care services before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using a nationwide Japanese inpatient administrative database.
