BACKGROUND: Missing or incomplete phenotypic information can severely deteriorate the statistical power in epidemiological studies. High-throughput quantification of small-molecules in bio-samples, i.e. 'metabolomics', is steadily gaining popularity, as it is highly informative for various phenotypical characteristics.
