An Exploration of Ethnocultural Empathy in Multicultural Secondary Schools in the United Kingdom

This study provided an opportunity to explore Ethnocultural Empathy and the perceived personal impact of the Black Lives Matter movement in two multi-cultural inner-city secondary schools, through interviews and quantitative analysis. The findings both replicate aspects of other studies in the area of Ethnocultural Empathy and deepen this understanding over a large sample size. This study has shown significant differences in Ethnocultural Empathy scores across a range of demographic factors including gender, roles, ethnicity and age. Interestingly, there were also a number of other significant differences across demographic factors regarding attitudes to the Black Lives Matter movement, although this is a less consistent result across the two school environments. The study concludes with a discussion of implications and potential areas for future research
