The Principle of Hope and the Radical Utopia: Ernst Bloch. In Ernst Bloch\u2019s chief work hope is analysed not only as man\u2019s main affection, but also as a fundamental positive attitude towards reality and, ultimately, as a constitutive principle of human acting and being, and indeed of being itself. Hope is here a human feature which transcends the factual state of affairs, but does not need a transcendent foundation or warrant. However, hope implies a picture of the future wished for, produced by the utopian imagination.
