Performed a double-blind study of 30 inpatients (aged 20\u201370 yrs) with major affective disorder to compare the safety and efficacy of fluvoxamine and imipramine. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, a cognitive global impression, and the Self-rating Depression Scale were administered to record symptomatology and general clinical changes. In both drug groups, there was an overall clinically significant improvement and both drugs were quite well tolerated. Anticholinergic effects and postural hypotension were more common in the imipramine group, while fluvoxamine was associated with more complaints of insomnia and anorexia.
