The Extended Projection Principle accounts for obligatory insertion of expletives (il, it, there. . . ) in Generative Grammar. My formulation of this Principle under a [CAT-] feature extends the inventory of expletives to any preverbal element with interpretable categorial feature. This hypothesis predicts there is no ‘strict VSO' language. Verb initial languages are derived by remnant VP movement or get expletive insertion (X(P)-VSO type). I show how EPP exactly predicts word orders in Breton, emblematic figure of the X(P)-VSO type represented also by Celtic and Semitic languages. I propose a detailed analysis of Breton.
