The construction and maintenance of coral reefs primarily depends on the calcification of corals, which produce a rigid skeleton made of CaCO3 in the crystalline form of aragonite. Most reef-building corals live in symbiosis with photosynthetic dinoflagellates of the Symbiodiniaceae family, which provide the coral host with energy and nutrients. Given their ecological importance, much progress has been made in identifying key elements of the mechanisms underlying coral calcification.
