While reverse items are usually considered to be the opposite of straight items, research has shown this not to be the case. This paper begins with a review of the literature on the effects of item wording direction. It then focuses on a widely used self-report scale and investigates the effects of wording direction on the dimensionality and on the functioning of the response categories through Classical Test Theory and an Item Response Theory approach
