International audienceThe book Law and Society in the Byzantine world and its sphere of influence deals with the teaching of law in the Byzantine society, the continuity and transformation of Roman law in the civil and religious laws of medieval Christian societies. It also addresses the transformations of medieval civil laws under the influence of religious prescriptions and the competition between civil law, more or less Christianized, and canon law. The work includes a section of Byzantine sigillography because Byzantine seals form a major source for knowledge of judges and the legal system, both civil and religious, in the Byzantine world.
