African-American Students\u27 Help-Seeking Behavior: A Comparative Study Based on Academic Performance and Class Level

Although African-American students face concerns which are difficult to handle alone, many do not seek help. These concerns, which maybe personal, educational, financial and/or, environmental in nature, may affect the academic performance and attrition rates of this population, if they are not addressed. This study was designed to determine whom the African-American, full-time, undergraduate population at Marquette University seeks as help sources when faced with personal, educational, financial and, environmental stressors. Reasons why subjects selected the help sources they did were also studied. Comparisons were made between the help-seeking behavior of students within this population who were performing below minimum academic standards, and those performing at or above minimum academic standards. Comparisons were made between the help-seeking behavior of upper and lower division students as well
