AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) carried out in centers dedicated to vascular surgery. METHODS: The study was supported by the Italian Registry for Vascular Activity, which collected the data of 89 centers of vascular surgery (almost all of the existing centers in Italy) during 2007. Data were collected for 5962 CEAs. A total of 5,809 patients (153 were operated bilaterally in two staged procedures), 3990 (68.7%) males and 1,819 (31.3%) females, whose ages ranged from 33 to 100 years (mean 72.7+/-7.78) underwent the surgery procedure.
