The ever more widespread use of English throughout the world is making the use of the term native competence increasingly redundant. In places where several languages are in contact, this old-fashioned idea is becoming more and more nonsensical. In this article two concepts of multilingualism are outlined, and also whether the term native speaker of English really has any validity nowadays. The idea of a Euro-English or Mid-Atlantic English -which distinguishes itself from both the British and American varieties- is introduced.
