Studies in Furan Derivatives: Part IV. Syntheses of some Bromo and lodo Benzofuran Derivatives

Bromination of methyl 5-hydroxy-3-methylcoumarilate and its methyl ether with bromine furnished mono, di and tribromo derivatives. Bromination of the methyl ether has also been studied with N-bromosuccinimide Iodination of methyl 6-hydroxy-3-methyl-coumarilate furnished the 7-iodo derivative and that of its methylether furnished a mixture of 5-and 7-iodo derivative. Some bromo and iodo benzofmans of known orientations have also been synthesised from the corresponding bromo and iodo phenolic aldehydes and ketones
