A short introduction on the physics of channeling and a detailed explanation of the experimental techniques used for the measurement of channeling and volume reflection phenomena are presented. Emphasis is placed on the experiment performed at the CERN SPS by the H8-RD22 Collaboration, which deflected a 400 GeV/c proton beam by means of a short bent silicon crystal with very high efficiency. A brief review of other channeling experiments is done focusing on the possible application of channeling for polarizing particle beams
