This paper describes the APEmille project, jointly carried out by INFN and DESY. It mainly focuses on the architectural features of this massively parallel compute engine that matches the computational requirements of LGT. In the paper I briefly cover the story of the APE projects, discuss the requirements of any efficient LGT engine and finally describe the APEmille machine
