Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) is one of the most important complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), occurring in 14-75% of SLE patients. Neurological and psychiatric involvement is mainly manifested as cerebrovascular disease, seizures, cognitive impairment, headaches and psychosis. However, diagnosis of brain involvement in SLE (i.e., neuropsychiatric lupus: NPSLE) as well as understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms still remains a difficult challenge.
