Strain localization occurs on all scales, from small laboratory samples up to crustal fault zones. Since localized deformation can significantly influence the stress field, strain partitioning and fluid transport, it is important to have a fundamental understanding of the mechanics of strain localization in rocks. The interplay between overburden-related boundary conditions and rock rheology can be responsible for the development of dilatant (i.e. joints and veins) and/or contractional (i.e. compaction bands and pressure solution seams) strain localization features.
